1. SUMMERTIME (1955) di David Lean
A romance set in the most romantic city of the world, fitting isn’t it? Katherine Hepburn plays the part of a young American artist vacationing in Venice, but while there she will involuntarily catch the eye of a man who will do whatever it takes to win her affections. David Lean picked Venice and masterfully showed it to us as a young girl would see and experience it – maybe even the influence such a city could have onto her. 2. DEATH IN VENICE (1971) di Luchino Visconti
Italian director Visconti brought on the silver screen the movie adaptation of Thomas Mann’s masterpiece Death in Venice. His film was universally praised for the faithful rendering of early XX century Venice. Gustav Von Aschenbach is a musician undergoing a spiritual crisis and seeks refuge from his torments in Venice, taking a room at the Hotel des Bains, where he’ll get acquainted with a Polish family of aristocrats and, in particular, with their young son Tadzio. Our protagonist falls desperately in love with the boy because at that early pubescent stage of his life, Tadzio embodies everything art is supposed to be in Gustav’s opinion. Venice serves as the perfect frame for Gustav’s decadent desire for beauty. Continue reading clicking the below button >
3. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (2004) di Michael Radford
This is another masterpiece of literature (by Shakespeare) adapted into a movie, only this time it was realized in more recent years. Speaking about plot and screenplay, everything had been already taken care of by the illustrious English author in the XVI century when he wrote his Merchant of Venice, but Radford did an amazing job casting Al Pacino as the merchant and also in bringing back to life XVI century Venice and its costumes. Furthermore, his photography is so perfect, he really brought the beauty of Venice on the big screen. Continue reading clicking the below button >
4. CASINO ROYALE (2006) di Martin Campbell
Not even the English spy James Bond could resit Venice’s charm. Nods to the city’s beauty have been made in many chapters of the saga, but never before as in Casino Royale, where the city is the setting, and not an occasional scene. Bond will discover Vesper’s betrayal and from this moment on, the wildest chases will take place thought the canals, trying not be defeated by a time bomb that may kill the woman Bond is in love with. The most famous scene, obviously realized thanks to CGI, it that when the Grand Canal crashes down. Impressive and thankfully not real. Continue reading clicking the below button >
5. THE TOURIST (2010) di Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
This movie is a peculiar one: it’s a thriller and a romance, but it did not become famous thanks to how it was shot or recited – it was its setting, the beautiful Venice, that saved it. Depp leisurely strolling down Piazza San Marco or running away from the bad guys jumping from one Venetian roof to another – well that’s really something, the right combination between action and one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
