1. FEELING ROMANTIC
We’re optimists, so we’ll begin our list assuming you’re going to spend the night home with your significant other. A romantic comedy or something a bit more dramatic would be the obvious choices. There are lots of movies belonging to these genres and we could cut it short and say let’s just go with Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961, Blake Edwards) or Pretty Woman (1990, Gary Marshall), but we’ll name these movies instead:
Every blessed day (2012) by Paolo Virzì
This romantic comedy follows Guido and Antonia’s life; they love each other very much, but more often than not, their personalities and differences clash instead of stimulating them in a positive way, just like it happens in real life. This is why it’s easy to warm up to the protagonists and relate to their struggles.
Roman holidays (1953) by William Wyler

2.FEELING LIKE BEING IN COMPANY
You’ve invited your friends over to spend a cheerful night in your living room. The The Hangover trilogy may be a nice option, even better its 1978 predecessor Big Wednesday by John Milius. There are lots of movies dedicated to exploring the themes of firendship and comradeship from a female perspective too, Thelma and Luise to name the most famous – or even firendship stories told by an unsual protagonists, such is the case of the French feature Intouchables. They are all worth our time, for we all share a bond of friendship with someone.
Marrakech express (1989) by Gabriele Salvatores
Two adult men rekindle their youthful friendship thanks to a journey to Morocco. From each man’s point of view to a joint one, Salvadores explores the effect of time over human bonds.
Perfect strangers (2016) by Paolo Genovese
A jolly dinner with friends gone wrong – what happened? The Italian director asks his watchers a simple question: would you allow people to look into your smartphone and discover all about your weaknesses, your kinks, your secrets?
3.FEELING LIKE BINGE-WATCHING
The advent of streaming websites such as Netflix have given us the chance to get obssessed with a show, a movie or a Tv series and bing-watch it, even many times over. Especially Tv series have evolved from the 90’s when they were a minor source of entertainment – now they are so good, they legit rival movies, we’ll name a couple of masterpieces: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, House of Cards and Narcos. This weekend wee suggest you take a look at these two amazing Italian Tv series.
The YOUNG POPE (2016) by Paolo Sorrentino
The Italian director and Academy Award winner Paolo Sorrentino is the genius behind this masterpiece. His The young Pope tells the controversial story of Pope Lenny Belardo (Jude Law at his best). There is no doubt this Tv series is very remiscent of The Great Beauty, the movie that got Sorrentino worldwide praise.
Gomorrah (2014) di Stefano Sollima
Originally a neo-noir/thriller movie based on a book of the same name that exposed criminal life and moral decay in the slums of Naples, it was so successful, they decided to make a Tv series keeping in line with the concept. This time the story focuses on the fictional camorra clan (a Mafia-like crime syndicate) of the Savastano family: they’ll do anything to uphold the family name and maintain control over their territory.
4.FEELING POLITICAL
One does not always approve of their government’s decisions. It’s becoming increasigly hard to ignore the many injustices or crimes against humanity that happen every day on this planet. People care (thankfully) and more movies are being made every year to denounce a problem or support a humanitarian cause. Products such as Romanzo Criminale, Milk or Diaz- don’t clean up the blood are just a few examples. Such movies capture a momentous event of our history. If you feel like getting political (or already are), you might enjoy these titles:
An avarage little man (1977) by Mario Monicelli
Based on Vincenzo Cerami’s book of the same name, Monicelli’s movie points its finger against the Italian bourgeoisie of the 60’s, capable of bullying a humble employee into humiliating compromises only to ensure his son will land a better job. That was the beginning of our moral decay, greed over values.
Suburra (2015) by Stefano Sollima
This movie was directed by the same genius behind Gomorrah Tv series, Vincenzo Sollima, who brings his neo-noir approach to this feature that exposes and harhly denounces corrupted politicians involved with Mafia – or whatever else might bring them more money and power, ultimately damaging the unknowing citizens. Suburra’s Italy is a place where nothing legal happens and the government either ignores or joins in the traffics.
