We’ll begin our tour here since this place is quite close to the parking lot (and the best way to reach Siena is by car). Fontebranda is a fountain encased in a sort of building and you’ll find it described in Dante’s Divine Comedy and in historical documents about Saint Catherine and how she would come here to wash her clothes. The flowing waters of this fountain acquire a melodious echo thanks to the building that surrounds them; by night, the fountain comes to life thanks to a special set of lights. As if this place wasn’t already perfect, we remind you that you can reach the city center via the Costone, a sort of path that goes from Fontebranda all the way up to the heart of Siena while offering you a magnificent view of the Tuscan countryside. Isn’t it wonderful?

2 Porta Camollia

You may also enter Siena from this huge stone door. This monument too has often been described in literature (especially by writer Federigo Tozzi) and it’s a veritable, imposing masterpiece. Its purpose was (and still is) to welcome visitors both physically and emotionally, for its size is meant to communicate Siena’s power. On the arch there is a marble slab where it’s possible to read “Cor magis tibi Siena pandit” which, translated from Latin, means: Siena offers you its heart through this door – a sentence that can offer a couple of ideas to compose a declaration of love (or a proposal!).

3 La Torre del Mangia

You probably remember how in a previous article we listed this tower among the mysterious places of the city, but the Torre del Mangia isn’t “only” that. Since it’s possible to visit it and climbing all way to the top, we suggest you do it: once at the top, Siena and the whole of Tuscany will be literally at your feet, your love will dominate the world – for a bunch of magical minutes. If you are otherwise afraid of heights, you can always sit in Piazza del Campo beneath the tower and soak in the romantic view of the sun going down, the sky tinged with the colors of fire.

4. Museums

Siena is full of museums, like the Opera del Duomo. Countless galleries and halls “bursting” with masterpieces of all centuries. Beautiful things elicit the noblest feelings, it’s a fact. We encourage you to  visit all these places of eternal, beautiful art and let these paintings, sculptures and objets d’art bear witness to your love and carry it with them for eternity.

5 Santa Maria in Provenzano church

When we think about Siena we probably envision its reddish bricks and its distinctive architectural style. Well, this church is definitely one of a kind, with its white marble façade and its light blue cupola; built in Mannerist style, this church looks like someone has magically stolen a typical Roman church from Rome to place it in the red heart of Siena. It’s so unique, it looks like a castle from a fairy tale and this is why we suggest you visit it. Furthermore, every July 2 the famous horse race known as Palio di Siena actually begins here, with a cortège composed by the representatives of all the districts (the racing teams) who gather here to pay homage to the holy Advocata Nostra, the Virgin of Provenzano and patroness of the Palio.

6. Orto de’ Pecci’s garden

One can’t visit Siena without visiting its green heart. This gardens are the green heart of the city, a piece of Tuscan countryside placed next to Piazza del Campo. The atmosphere is bucolic and dreamy: trees, olive trees, fruits and flowers, the scented air and the feeling of happiness that derives from being surrounded by nature.

7. Fortezza medicea

The Medici weren’t masters of Florence only and this imposing fort is here to prove it. Known as Forte di Santa Barbara as well as Fortezza Medicea, today it’s one big open-air museum that contains gardens and other minor museums such as the Enoteca Italiana, a museum entirely dedicated to Italian wines where it’s also possible to taste these sublime liquid. We suggest you come visit this wonderful building, take a stroll through the gardens located on top of the ancient fortified walls – from where you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panorama – then come down to the Enoteca and make a toast to your love.
