Milan’s top universities seen by Idressitalian

Call it University or call it College, the highest degree of education was created in the Middle Age, though its origin dates back to Ancient Greece, were a similar institution was called Platonic Academy. The oldest university of the world was founded in Bologna in 1088 – and before long, also in lots of other Italian cities. By the XVI century, there were 54 universities in Europe, 19 of which Italian. According to the Times Higher Education, 20 Italian universities are among the 200 best European ones. 1.UNIVERSITA’ LUIGI BOCCONI

Founded in 1902 by Ferdinando Bocconi in honor of his son Luigi, who died during the Battle of Adua. Ferdinando’s aim was to improve Italy’s economy by educating young entrepreneurs and experts. Basically this was Italy’s first university to offer an Economics Degree. Following the newest Italian laws, now this institution offers a lot of different options: first level and second level degrees, masters and pre-experience courses, but also a Law Degree course, Master Degrees and PhDs. Financial Times and QS World University Ranking often list Bocconi among the best schools (rated 19th  in Europe and 25th in the world). This university is a private one, but more students enroll each year – 2016’s pupils totaled to almost 13.000. Luigi Bocconi has 170 universities partners scattered among 48 countries which means students are more often than not involved in international projects.

2.POLITECNICO

It’s the oldest university of Milan, founded in 1863 by Francesco Bioschi (politician, mathematician and already Dean of Pavia’s Univeristy) and originally called “Regio Istituto Tecnico Superiore”, it was meant to offer the best classes of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design – though at the very beginning it only offered a Engineering course. Originally located where the Senate now is, the Politecnico was relocated in Piazza Cavour in 1866 and moved again some years later to join the area called Città Studi. When it first opened, Politecnico counted no more than 30 students. The first woman to enroll was Tatiana Wedenison, but she did not complete her career – the first woman to graduate here was Gaetanina Calvi, who became a Civil Engineer in 1913. As for today this institution counts: 12 departments, 4 schools and 7 campuses; it offers first and second level degrees in subjects such as Design and Design for the Fashion System, Aeronautical Engineering as well as Chemical and Civil Engineering – and many more. Politecnico’s students can take part in international projects such as Idea League, Alliance4Tech, Medes and many more, all of which give the students a chance to travel the world, complete their career abroad and join in Italo-Chinese campuses. QS2016 awarded Politecnico the position of the best university in Italy and listed it in the top 200 universities of the world. Also, it’s in the top five European universities when it comes to research in the following fields: Architecture and Build Environment, Art&Design, Computer Science and Informatics. Then again its among the top 50 in the following fields: Architecture and Build Environment, Art&Design, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.

What to study: Architecture and Engineering

3.UNIVERSITA’ CATTOLICA DEL SACRO CUORE

This is the most important private catholic university of Europe and it was founded in 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli and other religious institutions. It’s so big and so influential, it has 5 campuses in five different cities, the most famous one being the Policlinico Gemelli Hospital in Rome. Sometimes called simply La Cattolica, it counts 12 departments and offers first and second level degrees, its students will be also able to continue their careers in various hospitals  and clinics. This institution is located near Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, inside the once monastery of said church. According to QS University Ranking 2016, La Cattolica is amongst the top 200 universities of the world when it comes to Accounting and Finance; the Anvur Survey listed it among the top 10 Italian universities when it comes to Economics.

What to study: Law

4.UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI DI MILANO

This is a public university, hence it’s often referred to as Statale. Founded in 1923 it’s Milan’s biggest university thanks to its 45.000 students; it’s also part of LERU (League of European Research Universities) and a known research center in Europe. It offers 73 first level degrees and 55 second level degrees classes, covering every field, from Medicine to Philosophy. Statale offers its students the possibility of joining international  research projects – the best example being the case of Medicine and Surgery. Reuters listed it at the second place (right behind Politecnico) in Italy and 52nd in Europe thanks to its innovative approach and variety of fields. Statale has published more than 22.000 scientific articles and essays, it has more than 1000 research projects active, 61 patents and 16 spin-offs – a brand new type of project that employs the know-how of a given company and starting from here, develops a new research meant to improve the initial knowledge.

Since 1958 the institution has one branch in Antarctica, where its students can pursue their career as Geophysicists together with students and experts from all over the world.

Statale’s library Biblioteca di Egittologia is “home” to 16000 of the most important and precious books of the entire planet; in all, this university owns more than 1.200.000 books and 155 databases.

Statale’s Erasmus projects involved more than 1.500.000 students in 20 years.

What to study: Medicine, Law or Arts&Letters

5.UNIVERSITA’ VITA- SALUTE SAN RAFFAELE

Founded in 1996 by Father Luigi Maria Verzè who also served as Dean until his death, it originally focused only on Psychology. Subsequently Medicine and Philosophy were added. It’s a private institution that ranked 309th in the Wolrd Rank and 11th in Italy. Now it’s one of the best universities where to study Medicine; as of recently, San Raffaele joined forces with laboratories in Europe, USA and Canada in order to find a cure against ASL. Students can opt for Philosophy, Biotechnology, Physiotherapy, Dental Hygiene, but also International MD Program, Medicine and Surgery, Cognitive Psychology in Health Communication – plus lots of masters and PhDs. A brand new class in Rhethoric for Enterprises and Politics has been added. Barbara Berlusconi studied here. Some of the most illustrious professors are Immunology expert Doctor Roberto Burioni; ASL researcher Doctor Giancarlo Comi and Head of Anesthesiology and Reanimation Doctor Zangrillo.

6.UNIVERSITA’ DEGLI STUDI MILANO-BICOCCA

This university is a public one and it was founded in 1998 with the precise aim of creating new laboratories for as many researches as possible and  offer a second institution student may opt for instead of Milan’s public University that was way too crowded to function properly. It was 1993 when the City Council picked the Bicocca area as the the spot where the new campus would be built; today the Bicocca University counts  21 buildings that host various departments: Economics and Statistics, Psychology, Law – only Medicine is in Monza, a city not far from Milan. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014-2015 listed Bicocca as the third university of Italy (QS ranked it 16th ) and included it in the top 300 of the world. When it comes to more specific fields, Bicocca’s in the top 200 for Medicine and Physics – also is one of the best universities of Italy for Geography. Psychology and Marine and Earth Sciences. MIUR also selected Bicocca in its 2011-2012 ranking focusing on the quality of teaching and research. Then again its one of the best institutions when it comes to Chemistry and Pharmacy, Chemical Sciences. In short, this is simply one of the best universities to enroll at, it comes as no surprise that more than 40.000 students choose it.

Una vita ad immaginare e costruire un futuro che non è mai stato così chiaro e limpido. Fatto di emozioni inesauribili alla vista dei colori che questo mio Paese sa ogni giorno regalarmi. Ho viaggiato, senza mai stancarmi, per poi fermarmi dinanzi al blu del mio Mediterraneo. Lì capire che qualcosa di grande e profondo, intenso e meraviglioso, stava accadendomi; e che non mi sarei mai più fermato. Tuffandomi in quel mare sapevo che non avrei più potuto tornare indietro. Al contempo sapevo che i brividi che mi percorrevano sarebbero stati i vostri. E che insieme avremmo corso sempre più veloce verso qualcosa di puro, autentico, genuino, felice. Qualcosa che con orgoglio chiamo Idressitalian.
