How to dress for a successful job interview according to @Idressitalian
It is true, there is no other place in the world that pays so much attention to dress code than Italy. Also, and above all, during a job interview.
Yes, because the way we dress reflects clearly our personality and, in quality of lovers of beauty, we love to surround ourselves with people who are beautiful, inside and out.
Having selected more than one person during my life, and having often taken part in successful interviews in and out of Italy, I find myself writing about 5 precious pieced of advice that will, without a doubt, make a difference. Discover them clicking the button below >
1.BE YOURSELF, EVEN WHEN YOU DRESS
This is a well-known rule, it is valid in all situations. I’ll explain myself better, lets imagine you’re applying for a job in a bank. Elegance will have to be one of the main traits. This because, if you commit to wearing something, you need to know how to wear it. Careful eyes will notice how you tie your tie, how you button up your jacket and, women, how you enter the room walking in heels. The rule is “be yourself”, be comfortable, because only this way you can show the best of yourselves. In conclusion, imagine you get the job wearing something that isn’t you, are you really ready to commit to wearing similar clothes that “are not you” everyday?
2. FOR EACH TYPE OF INTERVIEW AN OUTFIT
You might think this is obvious, consequence of the first point, but I assure you it is not. It has happened to me to interview for a start-up for which I work, young people with a suit. Nothing more wrong. Your outfit must reflect the philosophy of the company that is interviewing you. Above all, don’t try to imitate or copy those who already have a job there. Take inspiration but show the person interviewing you who you are, that you are unique even in the way you present yourself. Example is the choice of tie, how you wear it with your shirt and your pochette will say a lot about you. Do not lie, the person sitting behind that desk always, always, always knows more than you do.
3. CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST
Imagine the scenario in which you leave the house looking perfect and you get to the interview soaked in rain. Or the scenario in which there is a bright Sun shining outside and you get to the interview dressed in dull colors. Looks are not everything but the eye wants its part. You need to be harmonious with the person interviewing you, the company and everything surrounding you. You will have to give positive vibes so, if the sun is shining, wear nice delicate colors, such as blue or light blue, even green. If it rains, or it is a dark day, be more Armani. Don’t get there covered in rain, you will demonstrate scarse predisposition for organizing yourselves. This last one is valid for 90% of cases, the rest are luck/improvising.
4.DETAILS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As saying earlier, be careful with how you tie your tie. 80% of men under 30 don’t know how to do this. A same percentage of women do not know how to wear a tailleur. What do those men do? They ask mum, dad or, if they’re blessed with a woman who knows her stuff, their girlfriend. How can you succeed if you do not even know how to tie your tie properly?
When I was 19, I didn’t know wither. Thank goodness there are tutorials all over the internet, a little practice and you will be very proud of the results after a while. Now for women, you need to know how to combine your clothes properly, you do not want to be a punch in the eye of yellow or green. Keep it simple, elegant, do not exaggerate with accessories. Play with contrasts but keep it simple. Never more than 3 colors, NEVER!
5. THE ENDS JUSTIFY THE MEANS AND THE CRAFT TRICKS
For men:
- If you have a suit, the coat must always be buttoned up, until you sit down. Also, if your jacket has 3 buttons, close only the middle one and maybe the first. If it only has 2, the just the first. (I stress again, just the first!). Also, no waistcoat, if you want to dare a bit then wear a nice cachemire cardigan under your suit jacket.
- If your shirt is striped, then your tie has to be mono-colored and viceversa. The pochette has to recall the colors of your shirt and your tie. If the pochette is mono-colored: white shirt, white pochette; light blue shirt, light blue pochette.
- If you opt for a jacket with a different color than your trousers, keep it open and here play with harmonic contrasts, nothing too extravagant. Example: grey trousers, black coat and dark blue shirt and viceversa.
- Do you love having your initials sewed? Great, me too. However, make sure they are sewed on the part that touches your last rib on the right so they are visible. Any other position will not make you look good, trust me.
- If you’re going for an interview at Facebook & Co. you can try wearing a simple t-shirt but make sure it is well-ironed. Simplicity does not equal “I do what I want”
For women (seen by a man)
- The ends justify the means? Yes, but only to the curve. Never, never try getting a job by being sensual, even if (and now too often) you get it, be more than certain that you will regret it forever if you have any sense of dignity or sensibility.
- This does not mean you need to be super conservative. The trick is to get them to remember you, not impress them in the moment. Make sure they remember you because of your style.
- The key word is always “measure”. No massively high-heels, no skin-colored tights and no unbuttoned shirts below the second button.
- If you are going for an interview at Prada, don’t wear a Chanel bag even if it is stunning. Also, don’t overdo the Prada look. Make sure you demonstrate to be in line with the company but without overdoing it. (Prada and Chanel were examples)
Unisex tricks
- Rem tene, verba sequentur (have knowledge and things words will come by themselves)
