No time to dine at home? Here’s some healthy lunchbox ideas

Healthy lunchboxes to let you feel and work better and better!

In Milan it’s called “schiscetta”, Londoners call it “lunchbox” while in Japan it’s known as “bento”. What are talking about? We’re talking about a little box made of different materials, be it tin or plastic and it serves the purpose of carrying our food at work or school, at the park or any other place too far from home for us going back and dine there. The schiscetta has been used by carpenters, office workers and students for ages as a means of saving money and having a healthier lunch than the sandwich or pizza bought and gulped in haste. The lunchbox main pros are: saving money and time when it’s time to eat, one won’t have to run to the nearest bar, buy the first thing they see and eat it as quickly as possible, running back to their work place. Secondly, one can select at home what to eat during lunch, which means choosing healthy food that in turn means ingesting the right nutrients and not getting fat. After all, it’s extremely rare for workers to have a restaurant that offers healthy food at a reasonable price near their office.

What do we want from our lunch break?
First of all, we don’t want to eat fat unhealthy junk food
An unbalanced meal can cause sleepiness which is something we absolutely don’t want
We need to be able to eat reasonably quick
We want to mind our pockets
A Federconsumi’s study observed that those who eat at the restaurant every week of the month, end up with an outlay of 330 euros. The same study highlighted that women between 25 and 44 years of age, prefer bringing their lunchbox to work, because:

45% of them declared that it helps saving money
38% of them declared that it helps them eating healthy
28% of them declared that it helps saving time

Why should we use the lunchbox?

It regulates our eating habits
We don’t end up buying junk food
Avoiding junk food means avoiding hydrogenated fats -they’re so unhealthy
We get to eat a balanced meal, with proteins, good carbs and good fats
A balanced meal will also provide nutrients and minerals
We won’t overeat at dinner
Keeps our weight in check

Why do we often eat junk food?
As I often repeat to my clients, eating junk food is the consequence of disorganized eating habits: we’re hungry and we buy the first thing we see just because. Continue reading clicking the below button Next >

Rules for turning your lunch break into a fun and healthy moment

  1. Never skip one meal, especially lunch. It’s a scientific truth that skipping lunch will make us overeat during dinner, resulting in putting on weight. Furthermore, a little snack helps us being productive and alert.
  2. Don’t eat in front of your computer, it may result in indigestion. Lunch is fundamental for our body but also for our mind, that needs some break and relax. If the weather’s fine, leave your desk and go for a stroll at the park or just sit on a bench surrounded by trees.
  3. Is it a rainy day? Then spend your lunch time with your colleagues, form bonds.
  4. Don’t talk about work nor work-related topics. It’s a break, live it as such and just relax.
  5. Don’t eat alone. Eat in the company of a colleague or a friend, so as to avoid remaining stuck at your desk thinking about work or, even worst, waste your lunch break scrolling social pages- neither option will give any rest to your mind.
  6. Chew slowly. Digestion begins in the mouth, chewing food. Taste what you’re eating and you’ll see your stomach (and your body) will thank you.
  7. Be proud of your lunchbox, your colleagues will be impressed by the effort put into your lunch and the fact that this means that you’re taking actual care of yourself. This is probably the most important point.
  8. Try avoiding smelly foods, so as not to disturb your colleagues’ noses.
  9. Eat your lunch outside, maybe a park and take a stroll afterward. It will help your digestion and your mind to remain focused on your work or your books for the rest of the day. Continue reading clicking the below button Next >

What to put into your lunchbox
A balanced meal has to contain all nutrients: good carbs, proteins, good fats.
Whole wheat offers you the right carbs and a steady supply of energy, plus if your belly feels full, you won’t eat any extras. You can choose between rice, black rice, pasta or cous cous.
Vegetables, either fresh or cooked.
Eat proteins: tuna, tofu, parmesan, chicken or mackerel.
Don’t forget to add a spoon of olive oil, which supplies the good fats.
Looking for inspiration for a tasty recipe?
Here’s a spelt salat with veggies and parmesan.

Ingredients:
– Spelt
– Tomatoes
– Rocket
– Zucchini
– Carrots
– Celery
– One red radicchio leaf
– Olive oil
– Salt and turmeric to taste
– Parmesan

Directions.
Cut the tomato, carrots, celery and zucchini to little cubes. Sear them in a pan with water and salt. Meanwhile, cook the spelt and dry it when ready. Let it cool.
When the spelt is cool, add the vegetables you’re previously cooked. Now add rocket leaves, olive oil and parmesan. Take care to place a radicchio leaf first in your box, that will serve as if it were the actual container of your salad.
