2. DEATH IN VENICE (1971) di Luchino Visconti
Italian director Visconti brought on the silver screen the movie adaptation of Thomas Mann’s masterpiece Death in Venice. His film was universally praised for the faithful rendering of early XX century Venice. Gustav Von Aschenbach is a musician undergoing a spiritual crisis and seeks refuge from his torments in Venice, taking a room at the Hotel des Bains, where he’ll get acquainted with a Polish family of aristocrats and, in particular, with their young son Tadzio. Our protagonist falls desperately in love with the boy because at that early pubescent stage of his life, Tadzio embodies everything art is supposed to be in Gustav’s opinion.
