2.POLITECNICO
It’s the oldest university of Milan, founded in 1863 by Francesco Bioschi (politician, mathematician and already Dean of Pavia’s Univeristy) and originally called “Regio Istituto Tecnico Superiore”, it was meant to offer the best classes of Engineering, Architecture and Industrial Design – though at the very beginning it only offered a Engineering course. Originally located where the Senate now is, the Politecnico was relocated in Piazza Cavour in 1866 and moved again some years later to join the area called Città Studi. When it first opened, Politecnico counted no more than 30 students. The first woman to enroll was Tatiana Wedenison, but she did not complete her career – the first woman to graduate here was Gaetanina Calvi, who became a Civil Engineer in 1913. As for today this institution counts: 12 departments, 4 schools and 7 campuses; it offers first and second level degrees in subjects such as Design and Design for the Fashion System, Aeronautical Engineering as well as Chemical and Civil Engineering – and many more. Politecnico’s students can take part in international projects such as Idea League, Alliance4Tech, Medes and many more, all of which give the students a chance to travel the world, complete their career abroad and join in Italo-Chinese campuses. QS2016 awarded Politecnico the position of the best university in Italy and listed it in the top 200 universities of the world. Also, it’s in the top five European universities when it comes to research in the following fields: Architecture and Build Environment, Art&Design, Computer Science and Informatics. Then again its among the top 50 in the following fields: Architecture and Build Environment, Art&Design, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering, Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering.
